VILLAGE OF CHAGRIN FALLS
STREETS AND SIDEWALKS COMMITTEE
May 23, 2011
Members present: Evans, Lutz, Subel
Also present: Himes, Patton, Williams, deConingh, Edwards
The meeting was called to order at 6:15 p.m. by Chairman Janis Evans.
CAR SHOWS
Mr. Himes explained that the car shows in the past were on Thursday nights from June through September on North Franklin Street and in Triangle Park. There has also been a car show on the 4th of July. He said the Parks Commission has recommended that the car shows no longer take place in the park and no longer have cars in the park. They recommended that the Thursday night car shows either be relocated or stopped.
Mr. Himes said Your Home Town, which was the historic sponsor of the car shows, has decided that they were no longer going to sponsor it and the Chamber of Commerce has stepped into that role. He said he advised the Chamber that they need to reapply for approval for both the use of the park for the 4th of July event and also the Thursday night car shows that are in the public right-of-way. They would need Council’s approval for the use of the public right-of-way.
Mrs. Lutz said at the Parks Commission meeting they determined that Triangle Park was being damaged by the car show and that the park itself was never meant to be used for that event. It just started growing into the park from the street.
Mrs. Evans said merchants have complained about this event. Mrs. Lutz said the car shows do not promote commerce for the Village. Comments were heard and questions were answered. One particular comment was that all the car show does is take up valuable parking spaces.
Mrs. Evans said this can be discussed further at a later date.
SAFE ROUTES TO SCHOOL COORDINATOR
Mr. Himes explained that in the second round of the Safe Routes to School agreement the Village has been awarded $15,000 per year for a Safe Routes to School Coordinator. The legislation and contract is on Council’s agenda for tonight.
There was lengthy discussion, comments were heard, and questions were answered.
Moved by Mrs. Lutz, seconded by Mrs. Evans that we recommend to Council the passage of this Safe Routes to School coordinator. Carried. Ayes: Evans, Lutz. Abstain: Subel. Nays: None.
The meeting adjourned at 6:47 p.m.
