Emergency Preparedness Procedures
(as recommended by Cuyahoga County
Emergency Management)

This brochure was developed to provide you information on simply being prepared in the event there is a major emergency in or near our community.  Also see U.S. Department Of Homeland Security and The American Red Cross Eemergency Services. And for more information about the flow of resources in our Village, see this chart.

Prepare a Disaster Supplies Kit

    • Stock supplies for you and your family for at least 72 hours.
    • A supply of water (1 gallon per day per person), stored in sealed, unbreakable containers.
    • Keep a small amount of bleach (approx. 8 to 16 drops per gallon of water to purify).
    • A supply of non-perishable packaged or canned food and a can opener. Check expiration dates and rotate regularly. Remember non-food staples such as paper towels, toilet paper and hygiene supplies.
    • A change of clothing, rain gear and sturdy shoes.
    • Blankets and sleeping bags.
    • A first aid kit and any prescription medications.
    • An extra pair of glasses and hearing aid batteries, if applicable.
    • Credit cards and a moderate amount of cash(not large sums).
    • A list of important family information, medical needs, etc.
    • A small tool kit.

Energy and Communication Concerns

    • Make certain all flashlights and radios have fresh batteries. Keep batteries separate until needed. Consider having a NOAA Weather Radio.
    • Be prepared to use battery powered radios and TVs to keep updated on emergency situations.
    • The Emergency Alert System will be used to transmit any information over the radio and TV.
    • Use light sticks and battery-operated lanterns in case of power outages.
    • If weather is cold, consider closing off rooms of the house and using auxiliary means of heat, such as fireplaces, or fuel- fired portable heaters(be prepared to monitor CO levels when using this equipment).
    • Store any flammable liquids, kept in readiness, in approved containers only.
    • Sterno, camp stoves and propane grills may be used for cooking.
    • Have fire extinguishers ready and charged.
    • Keep your automobile tank at least half full.
    • Stay away from any downed power lines.
    • Keep a phone book available to look up any emergency numbers.

If You Need To Evacuate

    • Listen to radio and TV announcements for locations of emergency shelters.
    • Wear protective clothing and sturdy shoes.
    • Take your Disaster Supplies Kit.
    • Lock your home.
    • Use travel routes specified by local officials
    • Take games or decks of cards to have something to do at the shelter.

If You Need To Shelter In Place

    • Bring all family members and pets inside, then close and lock all doors and windows.
    • Listen to your local radio or TV for information.
    • Turn off all heating, cooling and ventilation systems if the incident involves hazardous materials.
    • Have a pre-designated shelter room, equipped with plastic and duct tape that can be placed around windows and doors.
    • Do Not leave your shelter area until given an ALL CLEAR by local officials.
