RIVERSIDE PARK
NatureWorks grant for playground improvements: Jeff Snedeker reported that ODNR has approved the CT plans so they can now be put out for bidding. Tony said that once the bids are back, we will be able to determine how the Jaycees can help with their in-kind donation of labor, most likely putting down topsoil and seeding the former ice skating rink area. July is the target time for this rehabilitation as well as the installation of the new playground equipment.
The Valley Art Center, as it has in the past, will share 50/50 with the Jaycees in the cost of restoring the park following Art by the Falls.
Steve Miller proposed free summer Saturday movie nights in the park using equipment to be rented or purchased from Open Air Cinemas. The concept was well received and Steve was asked to obtain more information.
BEAUTIFICATION
Jeff Snedeker reported that $380,000 has been cut from the proposed 2010-2011 Village budget, including the $2,500 requested by Connie DeGood for plant material for parks, bump-outs, and urns for the coming summer season. Also, instead of the usual 126 hanging baskets, only 82, which will be located where irrigation is available, will be afforded by the $5,000 donation from Dogwood Valley Garden Club; this includes North Main, North Franklin, and some on Bell and East Washington streets. The baskets will be taken to Urban Growers (Frank Nedelka at 440-834-1143) for planting this week.
The Service Department may not be hiring as many part-time workers as in the past; also, there have been no responses to the horticultural job description distributed to various colleges and universities in the nearby areas.
Since the budget is still being considered, Tony will submit a request for a lesser amount for the Beautification budget in the hope that funding from the general reserves can be allocated. Mrs. DeGood will be contacted about this issue as well.
Regarding the urns around town, the possibility of asking the merchants to take responsibility for planting them was discussed.
The meeting was adjourned at 9:15 AM.
