VILLAGE OF CHAGRIN FALLS
PARKS COMMISSION
October 19, 2009
Members present: deConingh, Skeel, Zalba
Also present: Ben Himes, Jeff Snedeker
The meeting convened in Council Chambers in Village Hall at 8:35 AM.
RIVERSIDE PARK
• Ben Himes has received the formal letter announcing that the NatureWorks grant from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources has been awarded to Chagrin Falls in the amount of $35,420 for the expansion of the playground; needless to say, the commissioners were delighted! The following procedures must take place:
o The commission needs to let Ben know ASAP the specific Big Toys equipment items that are desired.
o At the next Village Council meeting, Ben will ask for authorization for CT engineers to prepare plans for bidding.
o After engineering plans have been prepared, Ben will review them with the commission.
o Final plans must be submitted to ODNR for approval according to the grant.
o After approval, the project must be put out for competitive bid.
o Council will award the bid by legislation.
The commissioners determined that the project should be accomplished in two parts: the completion of the playground by the spring of 2010 should be its first priority; then, after the 2010 Art by the Falls event, the removal of the skating rink railroad ties, installation of new drainage, and creation of a level grassy area in place of the skating rink should be completed. Bidding out to professional contractors for the structural drain design will be necessary; the Jaycees will be depended upon for the labor-intensive part of the project.
• Bus shelter – This will remain in place even though regular RTA bus service has be discontinued; a shuttle in the early morning and late afternoon still provides some transportation.
• Newspaper dispensers – Since these relatively new dispensers have not been used very much, the commission recommended that they be removed and stored by the Service Department.
• The picnic table across from the bus shelter still needs to be moved back to its original location and anchored.
• The drinking fountains near the skating pond have been turned off for the winter season, but the buttons to press for water dispersal seem to have been removed.
• A picnic table east of the skating pond still needs to be anchored to its concrete pad.
TRIANGLE PARK
• The boulder with the brass plaque indicating that this area is listed on the National Register of Historic Places by the U.S. Department of the Interior has been installed. Connie DeGood has planted Japanese plum yew around it and the area has been mulched. It is a handsome addition to the park!
• An irrigation sprinkler east of the Bandstand has been repaired.
2009 ACCOMPLISHMENTS/2010 GOALS AND OBJECTIVES
At the next meeting, the commission will review these items. Anne will brainstorm some lists to e-mail to everyone; commissioners should e-mail their thoughts to her as well.
The meeting was adjourned at 9:10 AM
