 VILLAGE OF CHAGRIN FALLS
PARKS COMMISSION
July 20, 2009

Members present: deConingh, Skeel, Zalba

Also present: John Brockway, Ben Himes

In the audience: Connie DeGood

The meeting convened in Council Chambers in Village Hall at 8:38 A.M.

June minutes – approved

RIVERSIDE PARK
• Natureworks grant – Award announcements will be made in mid-September with funds to be made available the following spring. If the Village receives the grant, work cannot commence until funds are in hand.
• Entrance – Extensive pruning and weeding in the Riverside bed has been accomplished. Still need to plant replacement shrubs in place of two dead ilex; will later be mulched. Not sure if pruned forsythia is alive; will watch for new growth.
• Area east of municipal parking lot – old, thorny shrubs have been removed and earth reseeded.
BELL STREET PARK
• Need to prune western end, especially boxwood. Will take approximately one-half day.
TRIANGLE PARK
• The relocation of the millstone to the area east of the plaza is not possible because of underground electric and water lines. It was suggested by Mrs. Connie DeGood and Mrs. Wendy Naylor that an alternative could be the placement of a large boulder with a bronze plaque. This would denote the Chagrin Falls Triangle Park Commercial District as it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places by the United States Department of the Interior. Connie and John Brockway will locate a boulder (approximately 2’ high and 3-4’ long), and contact Sheffield Monuments about obtaining and installing a 12” x 15” bronze plaque. Consideration of this project and its costs must be presented to the Facilities and Services Committee at its next meeting on Monday, July 27. Council makes the final approval.

BEAUTIFICATION
• Urns – Annuals were sprayed for insect infestations on July 16 and 17. Concrete urns in the small park near the Popcorn Shop (T.C. Park) do not have drainage holes, causing problems with plant growth. John Brockway said they will be taken to Service Garage to be cleaned out.
• Several hanging baskets have failed because of irrigation problems.
• Need to continue making watering a priority through September.

The meeting was adjourned at 9:34 A.M.

NEXT MEETING:

Monday, August 17 at 8:30 A.M. in Council Chambers, Village Hall
