VILLAGE OF CHAGRIN FALLS
PARKS COMMISSION
September 21, 2009

Members present: deConingh, Skeel,

Also present: Ben Himes, Kathryn Garvey

The meeting convened in Council Chambers in Village Hall at 8:35 AM.

RIVERSIDE PARK
• The Safe Routes to School special event, Walk to School – Walk to Town on Thursday October 8 from 3:00 to 6:00 PM, was presented by Kathryn Garvey. Previous informal approval by Commission members was mentioned and officially confirmed at this meeting. This event will involve students from the Intermediate and Middle schools walking in large groups into town to Riverside Park. Pre-registration is required; approximately 400 students will participate in various activities in the park. Two tents will be erected, and tables provided by Safe Routes and the Village will be set up. The park refuse containers will be used as well as Rec Center recycling containers and large plastic bags provided by the Service Department. The library will make its lavatory facilities and large meeting room available, too. The Chagrin Falls Police Department will provide supervision at intersections along the walk route as well as one officer in the park. Parents, school officials, Chagrin Falls Council members, 30 parents, and many volunteers will support event activities. Ben Himes will give Kathryn a map of Riverside Park for planning purposes.

• Entrance to Riverside Park on the river side – The Service Department has planted two new Knockout roses to replace dead ilex; this entire area has also been mulched.
• The picnic table needs to be moved back to its original location across from the bus shelter and anchored.
• Bus shelter – The lexan panels have been removed.
• CEI has replaced the burned out floodlight near the skating pond and three lights along the brick walk leading up to the library. The old fixtures have been replaced with new ones that accommodate sodium bulbs which give off a more yellow light.
• Davey Tree has taken down dead trees all around the eastern end of the park and ground out the stumps. The Service Department has removed debris, spread grass seed, and covered with straw. The residents are definitely grateful.
• Two new trees have been planted opposite the skating pond, between the brick walk and the river.
• The drinking fountain near the skating pond is not draining and needs to be unclogged.
• A picnic table east of the skating pond needs to be anchored to its concrete pad.
• Natureworks grant – Still have not heard anything; a decision should be made soon.

TRIANGLE PARK
• Sheffield Monuments has completed the brass plaque and will be preparing the stone this week for the mounting of the plaque. Sheffield will contact John Brockway when it is ready for placement. Connie DeGood should also be notified so that she can be present. Also, she is hoping this will happen soon because she wants to plant some shrubs around it before the ground freezes.
• An area east of the Bandstand is very wet; something is wrong.

BEAUTIFICATION
• Beth Skeel expressed the committee’s pleasure in noting that the Service Department has continued to water the hanging baskets, hayracks, and flowerbeds around town throughout September. They look great. A few hanging baskets that are struggling will be replaced with ones moved from the outer edges of the downtown area.
• Beth Skeel and Anne deConingh met last month with representatives from the Catsden Garden Club, Susan Tomko and Mary Modroo, to determine where to plant some 600 daffodils bulbs to naturalize. In early October, the club will plant the hillside leading from the lowest level if the Stairway to the Falls up to the top of the slope. They will be mindful of avoiding the area of the slope below where cleared parking lot snow is piled.

The meeting was adjourned at 9:34 AM
