Village of Chagrin Falls
Parks Commission
October 25, 2011

Members present: deConingh, King, White

Also present: Ben Himes, John Brockway

The meeting was convened in the Village Hall Council Chambers at 8:39am.

MINUTES
Anne made a motion to approve the September 27 meeting minutes. Karla seconded the motion. The minutes were unanimously approved.

TRIANGLE PARK
Three holly bushes and nine cotoneasters were planted in an effort to eliminate people walking through the area.

RIVERSIDE PARK
Ben is unsure of timing for replacement of new oak and mature crab, and perhaps one other tree. Jeff has been the one in contact with Davey Tree. Ben said he would email Jeff for an approximate date.

Briar Hill performed the aerating and seeding, but with all the rain, the seed has not germinated. The area continues to be a muddy mess. Unfortunately, between the extensive damage done as a result of Blossom and the poor weather conditions, this just has not been a good season for growing grass. Ben will discuss the situation with the Jaycees in February.

All picnic tables at the eastern end of park have been anchored. Anne reported that the Service Department has offered to make wooden picnic tables this winter, when they are less busy. The Village would provide materials. Anne went on to say members of the Beautification Committee prefer the wooden picnic tables. Ben suggested we should be thinking about longevity and which are more aesthetically pleasing, not just initial costs. Concrete options were ruled out due to their weight. The tables selected need to be easily moved. A resin or wood/plastic composite was discussed, but the question was raised whether graffiti and etchings could be removed easily. Jeff Snedeker provided three catalogs with table options. Karla has them for reviewing. If the wooden option is chosen, these can be made this winter…the cost of materials could be absorbed. If the more expensive option is selected, the cost will need to be allocated in next year’s budget, and the tables will wait to be purchased.

The Safe Routes to School event was a complete success. The weather was wonderful and the event was well-attended.

John reported there is a sink hole behind the huge sycamore tree located at the front of the park, near the river’s edge. This situation will be investigated.

BELL STREET PARK
While trimming the hydrangeas, Anne noticed some areas need weeding and reseeding. The grass edges also need defining.
BEAUTIFICATION COMMITTEE
The clean up occurred on Tuesday, October 18. There are still a couple urns that need emptying and a couple bump-outs that need cleaning, but for the most part, the clean up is complete. John expressed his appreciation for the clean up. He said this is a great help to the Service Department.

RIVER RUN PARK
Nothing new to report.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:59am.
